Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who were killed in a fire that broke out at a shop in Chembur. 

The Chief Minister's office confirmed that a high-level inquiry will be conducted into the incident.

7 Killed In Chembur Fire Shop

As many as seven people, including two children, tragically lost their lives in this fire.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the blaze erupted around 5:20 AM on the ground floor of a multi-storey building located at plot no 16/1, Sidharth Colony, KN Gaikwad Marg, Chembur (E), claiming the lives of all seven members of the Gupta family.

The fire was caused by a short circuit near the electrical wiring close to the shop on the ground floor. The victims have been identified as Presi Prem Gupta (6), Manju Prem Gupta (30), Anita Dharamdev Gupta (39), Prem Chediram Gupta (30), Narendra Gupta (10), Vidhi Chediram Gupta (15), and Gita Devi Dharamdev Gupta (60).

DCP Zone 6 Hemraj Singh Rajput reported that the family lived on the upper two floors of the G+2 building, while the shop was situated on the ground floor.

 "We received a call around 6 AM regarding the incident at the G+2 building, where the family lived above the shop. Unfortunately, seven people died, although two individuals sleeping in the shop managed to escape," Rajput said.
