Mumbai: Showing India's engineering and technological prowess, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) fast-tracked the construction of a 21 km long Bullet Train tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex and Shilphata.

Sharing a video of the fast-paced construction of the Bullet Train tunnel, the Western Railways wrote on X, “21 km long tunnel in Maharashtra for #bullettrain project is rapidly taking shape, showcasing the incredible advancements in engineering and technology.”

The 21-km tunnel from Mumbai Bullet Train station to Shilphata in Maharashtra will have a 7-km stretch under the seat at Thane Creek, an intertidal zone, making it the first-of-its-kind tunnel coming up in the country.

It will have a single tube tunnel to accommodate two tracks meant for up and down tracks of the bullet train. To construct this tunnel, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) with cutter heads of 13.6-metre diameter are being used.

Construction began in April 2020, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, expected to become operational by 2028, will cut travel time between Mumbai to Ahmedabad to three hours.

Mumbai – Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project, spanning nearly 508.17 km, will connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad through 12 stations at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.1 lakh crore (US$15 billion).
