Mumbai: The Malad police have lodged an FIR against the manager, a waiter, and other staff members of Hope and Shine Lounge Hotel, after a customer found a cockroach in his cold coffee. The incident took place on Friday when Prateek Rawat, a 25-year-old resident of Lokhandwala, Andheri West, and an event management company owner, visited Hope and Shine Lounge with a friend around 9:30 p.m. on August 30.

The lounge, located on the second floor of the Solitor Building opposite Infinity Mall on Link Road, Malad West, was where they ordered two cold coffees. However, finding the coffee too bitter, they asked the waiter to add sugar. The waiter took the glasses back to the bar, added sugar, and returned the drinks to them.

As Rawat finished his coffee with a straw, he felt something unusual in the glass and found a cockroach inside. He immediately took a photo and showed it to the waiter.

The lounge owner soon approached Rawat, took the glass, and led him and his friend to the kitchen. He attempted to explain that a cockroach couldn't have passed through the mesh of the shaker used to prepare the cold coffee.

To prove his point, the owner placed the cockroach on the shaker net, ran water over it, and claimed it was impossible for the insect to have entered through that method. He then discarded the cockroach into the basin and washed it away.

"I have lodged a complaint with the Malad Police regarding this matter and plan to write a letter to the P North Department of the Municipality. I visited the BMC office, but it was closed on Saturday and Sunday. The hotel manager's attitude was extremely rude, even after finding a cockroach in the coffee. Additionally, the hotel runs an illegal hookah service. The hotel lacks safety and hygiene measures", said Rawat.

Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR under sections 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 274 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 275 (sale of noxious food or drink), and 3 (5) (general explanations) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
