Mumbai Rain Updates: Massive Downpour Across City, Several Flights Affected
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Thane, amidst heavy rainfall across both the cities. The BMC has put all the resources and the officials on alert to tackle any urgency in the city. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the ACs, who will be in the control room to monitor the situation, will be in direct touch with the District Magistrate (DM) control room for further updates. Meanwhile, the IMD said that extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places were very likely in Mumbai and Thane. According to the reports, two flights were diverted and seven others had to circle before landing at Mumbai airport due to adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, as the rain intensified, suburbs like Mulund experienced some of the heaviest downpours, leading to extensive water-logging. The ongoing deluge also severely impacted road traffic, causing delays and reducing visibility, while local train services faced disruptions.

- The railway commuters walked on tracks at the Chunabhatti Railway station as Mumbai faced severe waterlogging followed by torrential rains.
- Amidst heavy rains in Mumbai, a woman was drowned in an open drain in Andheri. The BMC confirmed the incident stating that a 45-year-old lady Vimal Gaikwad drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. She was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and sent to Cooper Hospital but was declared dead by doctors.
- The Central Railway spokesperson said, “Harbour line local trains have resumed after the water receded between Govandi-Mankhurd. Trains are running with caution and a restricted speed of 25 kmph. Services resumed at 11.23 pm.”
- Central Railways has issued an appeal to commuters, in a post on X, amidst heavy rains in several parts of Maharashtra , saying, "For your safety, please remain inside the train and avoid stepping onto the tracks. Due to heavy rains and waterlogging, local trains are delayed and operating at a cautious speed. We urge passengers to stay on board as you are safest inside the train. As the water recedes, the train will continue its journey to your destination. Your cooperation is essential for ensuring everyone's safety."
- In view of a heavy rains alert, the Pune district administration has issued orders to keep schools and colleges in Pune city as well as Pimpri Chinchwad area closed on Thursday. District collector Suhas Divase issued the directive after the India Meteorological Department issued an alert that there would be rains coupled with lightning and thunderstorms. On Wednesday, Pune city witnessed heavy rains in the evening and there was water-logging in several areas.

- Amidst heavy rain in Mumbai, the BMC said, “The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, till tomorrow morning at 8.30 am. In view of this, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared a holiday for tomorrow Thursday, 26 September 2024, in consideration of the safety of students. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration requests Mumbaikars to step out of homes only if required.”
- Mumbai Police tweeted, "IMD has issued a warning of heavy rain with thunder and lightning in Mumbai and suburbs till 26th September morning. Requesting all Mumbaikars to stay indoors, until essential. Please stay safe. Dial 100 in case of any emergencies."
- According to the ATC officials, the runway operations can be suspended as well if visibility reduces more at the Mumbai Airport. Those flights inbound to Mumbai and are already in the air have been updated about the weather and have been advised to be prepared for a diversion to their alternate if weather conditions worsen.
- As multiple flights from various cities to Mumbai were delayed due to low visibility and wind shear at the Mumbai Airport, sources from the Air Traffic Control (ATC) confirmed the weather status and also disclosed that over 30 flights destined for Mumbai, have been conveyed the message of delaying the flight before take off.
- Significant water-logging was reported from Kurla, Chembur, Mulund, Vikhroli, Breach Candy and some other areas in Mumbai, where people can be seen wading their way through waist-level water.
- Heavy rains in Mumbai and its suburbs on Wednesday, inundated low-lying areas, stopping local trains on tracks between Kurla and Thane stations and stranding passengers even as traffic crawled on roads.
- Amidst heavy rain in Mumbai, budget carrier SpiceJet alerted passengers, saying that flight departures or arrivals may be affected due to bad weather conditions. “Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected,” SpiceJet said.
- As per the officials of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, due to heavy rainfall in the city, seven go-arounds and two flight diversions were reported till 8.09 pm.
- The concerned officials have advised the citizens to avoid unnecessary travel if possible as rains will further strengthen.
- According to the civic officials, it has been raining in many parts of the city since the afternoon with Mulund and its surrounding areas experiencing the heaviest downpours. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, affecting road traffic and causing delays in Mumbai's suburban train services, which is considered the city's lifeline.

- Several flights to Mumbai reportedly diverted to other cities due to bad weather at the Mumbai Airport. Mumbai-bound Vistara Airline flight UK534 from Hyderabad reportedly returned back to Hyderabad due to bad weather.
- Visuals of water-logged roads surfaced from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, after heavy rain lashed several parts of the city.
- Roads remained waterlogged in many areas in Mumbai. Further, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Mumbai for the next few hours, according to the IMD.
