Over 87,000 Traffic Challans Issued In Delhi This Year, Overspeeding Tops List

Delhi Traffic Police has issued over 87,000 challans and more than 300,000 notices for red light violations this year, the official data revealed.

New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police has issued over 87,000 challans and more than 300,000 notices for red light violations this year, the official data revealed. 

Challans are issued by traffic personnel on-site, while notices are generated through traffic violation detection cameras. The data indicates that 87,430 challans for red light violations were recorded this year, compared to 66,774 in 2023 and 67,462 in 2022. The New Delhi district saw the highest number of challans, totaling 17,741, followed by 11,211 in the south district, 10,109 in the west, 8,719 in the southeast, and 6,790 in the southwest. In contrast, the northeast district reported the fewest challans at 1,140.

Surge In Red Light Violations 

Additionally, 3,12,541 notices for red light violations were issued up to September 15 this year, down from 5,90,227 in 2023 and 10,11,028 in 2022. The west district issued the highest number of notices at 59,762, followed by 55,562 in the south, 51,446 in the southwest, 44,750 in the north, and 33,488 in the northwest. Notably, the northeast, outer north, Rohini, and Shahdara districts reported no notices during this period.

For overspeeding violations, a total of 17,66,773 notices were issued, with the southwest district leading at 3,43,978, followed by 2,12,033 in the south and 1,99,288 in the north. The outer north district recorded the fewest notices, with only 1,004. In comparison, the number of notices for overspeeding stood at 30,10,685 in 2023 and 29,96,497 in 2022.

Earlier, the Delhi Traffic Police announced plans to procure over 300 red light violation detection (RLVD) cameras and over speed violation detection (OSVD) cameras for installation at various strategic locations across the city. This includes 203 RLVD cameras at 57 intersections and 125 OSVD cameras at 76 locations. The RLVD cameras will be placed in areas with frequent red light violations, while the OSVD cameras will target less crowded outskirts and high-speed areas, such as flyovers.
