PM Modi Likely To Visit Russia Next Month, Talks With Putin on Cards | What We Know So Far

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Russia next month, said reports on Tuesday. Reports said that preparations are underway for the annual India-Russia summit expected to be held in July this year. This would be Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Moscow since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict. 

The visit holds significance as it comes against the backdrop of the two-and-a-half-year-long Ukraine conflict, If the visit takes place, it would be Prime Minister Modi's first trip to Russia in the last five years as PM Modi had last visited Russia in September 2019. However, there is no official word from the Indian government as of yet. 

Preparations Underway For India-Russia Summit 

Russian local media, quoting a Kremlin official, reported that active preparations are underway for Modi's visit to Russia. "I can confirm that we are preparing a visit by the Prime Minister of India," Kremlin official Yuri Ushakov said, according to RIA Novosti news agency.

Modi To Hold Talks With Putin 

If the visit takes place, the Indian Prime Minister is expected to hold a summit-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow has been a time-tested partner for New Delhi since the signing of the Declaration on the India-Russia Strategic Partnership in 2000 and one the crucial defence suppliers of India. 

Notably, President Putin and Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar held talks last year, during which Putin invited PM Modi to visit Russia. PM Modi and Putin last met in September 2022 in Uzbekistan on the sidelines of hanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. As he met Putin, PM Modi told the Russian President that “today's era is not of war”. 

India-Russia Annual Summit 

The annual summit between the prime minister of India and the president of Russia is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

So far, 21 annual summits have taken place alternatively in India and Russia. The last summit was held on December 6, 2021 in New Delhi. Russian President Vladimir Putin had visited India to attend the summit.
