Ratnagiri Railways Station Roof Fall off in Heavy Rain before Inauguration, Video Goes Viral

Ratnagiri: Amid heavy rains in the Konkan region, a newly installed roof and cladding at Ratnagiri railway station were damaged, officials said on Monday. Gusty winds on Sunday evening caused tin sheets to be blown away, damaging around 15 to 20 square feet of the roof.

Part of Beautification Project

The damaged structure at the station’s west entrance was part of an ongoing beautification project by the state public works department. The work on the structure is yet to be completed, officials confirmed.

Video of Incident Goes Viral

A video showing the roof swaying in the wind and cladding falling off went viral on social media, attracting criticism and concerns regarding the safety of the passengers and the corruption levels in the department that the structure damaged and roof fell off before even inauguration. The incident has raised concerns among passengers about the quality of the construction work.

Besides Ratnagiri, complaints of water leakage have also been reported at Kudal and Sindhudurg Nagari railway stations. The damage has prompted questions regarding the overall standard of the project.

Konkan Railway Responds

A Konkan Railway spokesperson stated that the public works department, responsible for the work, has been informed. An MoU was signed between the department and the Konkan Railway for beautification efforts at 36 railway stations across the region.
