New Delhi: A red alert has been issued for the national capital Delhi and its adjoining areas as heavy rains lashed the city on Wednesday evening. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the coming hours across Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad. Wind speeds are likely to be in the range of 30 to 50 km/h.
"Moderate rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at North Delhi, Central-Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR in the next two hours," the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) said in the evening.
In addition to Delhi-NCR, the following nearby areas are also likely to experience showers:
The downpour in the national capital led to waterlogging in various parts of the Delhi-NCR region, disrupting traffic on several roads. Videos on social media show severe waterlogging in Rajendra Nagar, where three IAS aspirants tragically drowned three days ago due to basement flooding from the rain.
Other affected areas include Janpath, Karol Bagh, Nauroji Nagar, Pant Marg, and Mayur Vihar, among others. The weather department forecasts that the rainy conditions will persist until August 5.
