Red Alert Sounded In Delhi Amid Mounting Heatwave; Rainfall Predicted In Assam, Parts of Bengal
Amid the prevailing heatwave conditions in the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) scaled its warning to ‘Red Alert’.

New Delhi: Amid the prevailing heatwave conditions in the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) scaled its warning to ‘Red Alert’ from its previously announced ‘Orange Alert’ due to increasing temperature.
The Met department advised people to take necessary precautions outdoors and urged them to limit their exposure to the sun. “Very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages," the IMD warned.
The Weather Department advised people to stay hydrated and avoid all non-essential travel, especially during the afternoon.
The maximum temperature in the national capital on June 16 was recorded at 44.9 degrees Celsius, making it an unpleasant Sunday with the mercury rising six degrees above normal.
While, the minimum temperature was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, which is 5.7 degrees above the average for this season. The Meteorological Department also predicted a heat wave and warm night on Monday.
Red Alert Sounded For Rainfall in THESE States
The weather bureau predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in northeastern states and northern pockets of West Bengal, issuing a red alert for the upcoming days. The states expected to get a wet spell are Northern Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
“Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.5-204.4 mm) on 16th & 17th June and likely to get heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) during 18th-20th June, 2024,” the IMD wrote on X.

“Assam & Meghalaya is very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 16th & 17th June and exceptionally heavy rainfall on 18th June whereas likely to get heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 19 & 20th June,” it added.
It added that Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive isolated rainfall on June 17 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 18-20.
Further, it sounded a heatwave alert over many parts of Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Uttarakhand, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and Punjab on June 17. Heatwave conditions will also grip pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Division, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.
