Mumbai: Sanjay Kumar Verma was named as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra , on Tuesday, November 5. A 1990-batch IPS officer, Verma will succeed Rashmi Shukla. Verma, currently serves as Director General of Legal and Technical.

His appointment comes a day after Rashmi Shukla was shunted out following complaints by the opposition parties. Verma is set to retire in April 2028.

Rashmi Shukla's removal from top police post came a fortnight before the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024. In a major step, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered Shukla's immediate transfer following complaints from Congress and other political parties.

Earlier on Monay, Vivek Phansalkar was given additional charge after Rashmi Shukla's transfer. The poll body had directed the Maharashtra chief secretary to hand over Shukla's charge to the next senior-most IPS officer in the cadre. The chief secretary was also directed to send a panel of three IPS officers by Tuesday afternoon for appointment as DGP, said sources.
