Ratan Tata, the esteemed chairman emeritus of Tata Group and a veteran industrialist, died late Wednesday night at a Mumbai hospital. He was 86. Tata passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai around 11:30 PM after being admitted for several days. His family released a heartfelt statement, expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of love and respect he received during his life: "We his brothers, sisters, and family take solace and comfort in the outpouring of love and respect from all who admired him. While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity and purpose will continue to inspire future generations."

Commitment to Social Causes

Throughout his career, Ratan Tata consistently demonstrated his commitment to social causes, especially during times of national crisis. He notably stepped forward during the 26/11 attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid the struggles faced by millions, Tata opened the doors of his company to assist the government, pledging a total of ₹1,500 crore. The Tata Trusts committed ₹500 crore to combat COVID-19, describing it as "one of the toughest challenges the human race will face." Tata Sons subsequently announced an additional ₹1,000 crore in support.

"The COVID-19 crisis is one of the toughest challenges we will face as a race. The Tata Trusts and the Tata group companies have in the past risen to the needs of the nation. At this moment, the need of the hour is greater than any other time," Tata stated during the pandemic. Tata Sons expressed their commitment to collaborating with Tata Trusts, ensuring that "Chairman Emeritus Mr. Tata would be fully supporting their initiatives, and work in a collaborative manner to bring the full expertise of the group."

Tributes from Business Leaders

N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, also paid tribute to Tata, stating, "It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "I am extremely pained by his passing away. Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided stable leadership to one of India's oldest and most prestigious business houses."

Modi further noted, "At the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to several people thanks to his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to making our society better."

Ratan Tata's legacy as a visionary leader and compassionate philanthropist will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
