Who is S Paramesh? New Director General of Indian Coast Guard

New Delhi: S Paramesh assumed office as the new Director General of the Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday. He took charge at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, where he received a guard of honour. His appointment follows the demise of his predecessor, DG Rakesh Pal, last month. Paramesh had been officiating as Director General and was formally appointed by the government on Monday.

Three Decades of Service 

Over the past three decades, S Paramesh has served in various roles in the Indian Coast Guard. He has held commands of key vessels, including the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar and the Offshore Patrol Vessel Vishwast. He has also worked in several staff roles, including Deputy Director General (Operations and Coastal Security) and Principal Director (Operations) at the Coast Guard Headquarters. In addition, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East) in Chennai.

Leadership Roles Before Assuming Charge as DG 

Before assuming charge as Director General, Paramesh held several key positions. He was the Commander of the Coast Guard Region (East) and Coast Guard Region (West), managing operations on both seaboards. From July 23, 2018, to August 7, 2023, he was the Coast Guard Commander for the Eastern Seaboard. He later took on the role of Additional Director General of the Coast Guard before his appointment as Director General.

Educational Background

Paramesh is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi, and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. His education has supported his roles in both field operations and strategic planning.

Recognition and Awards

Throughout his service, Paramesh has received several honours, including the President's Tatrakshak Medal for Distinguished Service and the Tatrakshak Medal. He was also awarded the Director General Coast Guard Commendation in 2012 and the FOCINC (East) Commendation in 2009.
