Mumbai: A CCTV footage of the Shiv Sena leader's son and the accused, Mihir Shah (dressed in a black t-shirt), in the Worli hit-and-run case surfaced where he could be seen leaving a bar in Mumbai's Juhu area late on Saturday night. However, the car (Mercedes) in which Shah can be seen sitting is different from the car (BMW) involved in the accident.
Mihir Shah left the bar at around 1.45 am and headed towards Marine Drive and the accident happened in Worli early in the morning. The accident left a woman dead and her husband seriously injured.
The Worli police on Sunday recovered and confiscated the BMW car involved in the accident from the Bandra area of Mumbai. The intensity of the crash was such that the front portion of the BMW was damaged.
The law is equal for everyone and its implementation will not be different in the accident that took place on Sunday in Mumbai involving a BMW car, in which a woman was killed, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said.
When asked if the man involved in the Mumbai accident was a Shiv Sena leader's son, the CM said, "The law is equal for all and the government sees every case in the same way. There will be no separate rule for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law." "The police will not shield anyone. The Mumbai accident is unfortunate. I have spoken to the police department to take strict action," he added.
The woman, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), died after the two-wheeler on which she was travelling with her husband, Pradip, was hit by a BMW car in the early hours of Sunday on the arterial Annie Besant road in Worli, a police official said.
"Kaveri Nakhwa fell on the road. Passersby alerted police about the incident. She was rushed to civic-run Nair Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Kaveri and her husband are fisherfolk and were on their way home from Sassoon Dock in Colaba," he said.
The couple, who lived in the Worli Koliwada area, was returning after buying fish from the Sassoon Dock early morning when the car rammed into their two-wheeler, police said.
Meanwhile, the police on Sunday arrested the accused person's father and Shiv Sena leader, Rajesh Shah, and one Rajendra Singh, who was present in the car. The Mumbai police have constituted six teams to trace Mihir Shah (24), who remains at large ever since the accident came to light.
As per the police, Rajesh Shah, who is the deputy leader of the Shinde Sena in Palghar district, was arrested after hours-long questioning by the police. The police stated that it was found during the inquiry that the BMW was registered in the name of Rajesh Shah.
Raids were underway to nab the main accused (Mihir). The Mumbai Police are also interrogating the girlfriend of the accused as they have strong suspicions that the girlfriend aided in hiding him.
The case comes less than two months after the May 19 Pune Porsche crash which involved a rich brat. Two IT professionals hailing from Madhya Pradesh were knoecked down by luxurious car which was allegedly being driven by an inebriated minor driver.
The case hit national headlines after the boy was given bail by the Juvenile Justice Board on lenient terms and the Pune police uncovered an effort allegedly involving the accused's parents and doctors of Sassoon Hospital to switch blood samples to nullify alcohol tests and also force the family driver take blame for the crash.
