TRAI Calling to Discontinue Your Number? BEWARE

In this new scam tactic, you will get a call from a regular mobile number that will begin with an automated message saying that your number will be blocked in two hours and that you need to press ‘9’ for more information. The call will then be forwarded to a ‘TRAI official'.

How Does This Online Scam Work?

The official will explain to you how another number has been registered in your name and a complaint has been filed against that number for sending harassing messages. You will then be told that a clarification is required from the Police that you are not involved in illegal activities and only after a clarification letter from the police, your number will remain unblocked.

To sound authentic, you will also be given information like the FIR number, address of the shop from where the second sim has been bought and the name and position of the official speaking to you. Beware, the caller will try to transfer your call to the police.

TRAI Issues Warning

A text message has been sent by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) clarifying that they do not call anyone, to discontinue or block the contact numbers and that this is a scam in their name.

The message reads, “TRAI never sends any messages or calls to report illegal activities for verification/disconnection of mobile numbers. Be cautious of such messages/calls coming in the name of TRAI and consider it as a possible fraud. Verify any such messages or calls with the Customer Care of your mobile service provider and report it to the Department of Telecommunications through Chakshu module on Sanchar Saathi platform – https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/ or to the Cyber Crime Portal of Ministry of Home Affairs https://www.cybercrime.gov.in.”
