Bengaluru: The Karnataka Bandh on March 22 may disrupt the daily lives of residents across the state, as organisations and institutions respond to the call for a state-wide strike. Here's a breakdown of the impact on various sectors, including schools, metro services, public transport, and banks.

Why Karnataka Bandh?

The Karnataka Bandh was called after a KSRTC bus conductor was attacked by pro-Marathi groups in Belagavi in February last month. The incident reportedly happened after the BMTC bus conductor could not speak Marathi.

Schools and Educational Institutions
Schools and colleges in Karnataka have decided to remain closed for the day, prioritising the safety of students and staff. Educational authorities have issued guidelines to reschedule exams and academic activities that were planned for March 22.

Bengaluru Metro and other Public Transport
Public transport services, including metro operations in Bengaluru, are expected to operate at reduced capacity.  BMTC bus operators and auto unions are in full support of the bandh, leading to challenges for commuters.  Citizens may face trouble finding cabs and buses during the bandh hours.

Banks and Financial Services
Banking operations across the state may also experience interruptions as several employees' unions have extended their support to the bandh. While online banking services remain accessible, physical banking activities, such as cash withdrawals, deposits, and other in-branch services, are likely to be affected.  Customers are advised to plan their financial transactions accordingly.

Public Support
People in Karnataka are in complete support of the Bandh demanding justice for the BMTC driver who was harassed and beaten at the Karnataka- Maharashtra border.  Small shopkeepers and other commercial establishments may also remain shut in many parts of Karnataka.  Essential services like hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency response units, however, are expected to function without interruptions.
