Kukur Tihar 2024: What is the Festival That Celebrates Dogs?

Kukur Tihar, also known as the "Diwali for Dogs," is a unique festival celebrated annually in Nepal as part of the larger five-day Hindu festival of Tihar. Falling on the second day of Tihar, this special day is dedicated entirely to honoring and worshiping dogs, recognizing them as loyal companions and divine messengers. The festival typically coincides with Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Choti Diwali in India.

Origins in Hindu Mythology

The roots of Kukur Tihar lie deep in Hindu mythology. Dogs are believed to be the messengers of Yama, the god of death. They also serve as companions to various gods, such as Bhairava (an avatar of Lord Shiva), who has a dog named Shavan as his vahana (vehicle). In the epic Mahabharata, a dog follows the Pandavas on their final journey, symbolizing loyalty and protection. Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, refuses to enter heaven without his faithful companion, demonstrating the significance of dogs in Hindu belief systems.

The Rituals of Kukur Tihar

During Kukur Tihar, dogs, both pets and strays, are worshipped and adorned with tilaka , a red mark on their foreheads made of abir, rice, and yogurt and garlands of marigolds. 
 

The tilaka signifies the sanctity of the dogs, while the garlands symbolize respect and reverence. People also offer the dogs a feast of treats, including eggs, milk, meat, and special dog food.

It is considered a sin to mistreat or act disrespectfully toward dogs on this day.

 The festival serves as a reminder of the bond between humans and dogs, emphasizing their role as protectors who can sense danger. 

While Kukur Tihar focuses on dogs, other animals are also celebrated throughout the festival. Crows are honored on the first day (Kaag Tihar), and cows, oxen, and even crows receive offerings on the following days. This celebration highlights the Hindu belief in the interconnectedness of all living beings and their spiritual significance.

Kukur Tihar is a beautiful example of how human cultures can be respectful  towards animals. It serves as a reminder of the sacred bond between humans and dogs, a relationship rooted in mythology and celebrated through centuries of tradition.
