Guru Purnima 2024: The Madhya Pradesh government has announced two days of celebrations of Guru Purnima in schools across the state.

According to the order issued by the MP government, schools and colleges will conduct prayer assemblies, cultural programs, and essay competitions on July 20. Moreover, on July 21, there will be tributes to Veenavani Ma Saraswati, Guru Vandana, lamp lighting, and offerings.

Why Do We Celebrate ‘Guru Purnima’?

Guru Purnima, also known as Maharishi Veda Vyasa's birth anniversary or Ashadha Purnima, originated about 3,000 years ago. Maharishi Veda Vyasa, known as one of the most significant gurus in history, was born on this day. He is the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

Guru Purnima celebrates Maharishi Veda Vyasa and all the Gurus who help and guide us through different parts of our lives, enriching us along the way. For Buddhists, Guru Purnima is celebrated to honor Lord Buddha. It is believed that on this day, Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. This sermon, known as the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta', set in motion the Wheel of Dharma. Buddhists commemorate this day by expressing their gratitude to Buddha and their spiritual teachers.
