World Hypnotism Day is celebrated every year on January 4th with the aim of busting myths and misconceptions while promoting the truth and benefits of hypnosis to people around the world. It is believed that when a person is hypnotized, they are observed to be in a state of heightened concentration and focus, where their responsiveness to suggestion increases. Under the right guidance of a certified hypnotist, positive changes in a person’s attitude are also observed. It is proven that hypnosis is a great way to overcome smoking and alcohol addictions and helps alleviate chronic pain as well.
Hypnotism finds its earliest historical roots back in the late 18th century, when Franz Mesmer, a German physician, started using this phenomenon known as Mesmerism as a method of treatment for his patients back in Vienna and Paris. However, this concept was discouraged and rejected later, as there was no scientific evidence to support the facts. A Scottish surgeon, James Braid, revived the concept and relabeled it as the practice of ‘Hypnotism’.
The World Hypnotism Day Committee and Board Certified Hypnotist, Tom Nicoli, collaborated in 2004 and created World Hypnotism Day. The goals listed below hold the following significance:
1. To make individuals aware of the advantages of hypnosis.
2. Bust the myths and misconceptions revolving around hypnosis.
Organizing awareness events in order to inculcate a positive attitude in one’s life by overcoming traumatic experiences.
