One of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar is Kartik Purnima. For a number of reasons, this day holds significance. It is assumed that Lord Shiva took the shape of Tripurari on this day of the full moon in order to vanquish the Tripurasura brothers, a trio of demon brothers. It was on this day that Lord Vishnu's Matsya Avatar—the first of his ten primary avatars—was created. Karthigai Deepam (Tamil Nadu) and Dev Diwali (Kashi) coincide with Kartik Purnima celebrations. Lords Ganesha, Vishnu, Shiva, and Murugan (Lord Kartikeya) are worshipped by devotees, who honour them with pujas and lamp lighting. This year the festival is celebrated on November 27.
