The ancient science of Ayurveda has solutions, remedies and answers. From food to health, it has guidelines for everything. Ritucharya, an integral concept in Ayurveda, refers to seasonal routines that individuals should follow to maintain balance and well-being throughout the year. Recognising that each season has distinct influences on the body and mind, Ritucharya provides a framework for adapting one's lifestyle, diet, and daily practices to align with the changing natural rhythms.

Key principles of Ritucharya

The term "ritu" translates to season, and "charya" means regimen or behaviour. Together, Ritucharya emphasises the importance of adjusting daily habits in accordance with the ongoing season. Ayurveda recognizes six seasons, each lasting approximately two months: Shishira (late winter), Vasant (spring), Grishma (summer), Varsha (monsoon), Sharad (autumn), and Hemanta (early winter). The three doshas that are taken into consideration for Ritucharya are vata, kapha and pitta.

Dietary adjustments

Ayurveda suggests modifying dietary habits based on the dominant doshas (bio-energies) during a particular season. For example, during the cold and dry season of shishira, individuals are advised to favour warm, nourishing foods to counterbalance vata dosha. In contrast, during the hot and intense summer of grishma, cooling and hydrating foods help pacify pitta dosha.

Physical activity

Exercise routines should also be tailored to suit the season. In winter, when kapha dosha tends to accumulate, engaging in more invigorating activities helps prevent lethargy. In the heat of summer, moderate and cooling exercises are recommended to avoid overheating and imbalances associated with excess pitta.

Sleep patterns

Ritucharya emphasises the importance of adjusting sleep patterns to align with the changing seasons. In winter, when nights are longer, a slightly extended period of sleep is recommended. Conversely, during the longer days of summer, a shorter night's sleep is encouraged.

Daily routines

Ayurveda suggests being dedicated to specific daily practices based on the season. For instance, the use of oils or moisturisers may be more beneficial in dry winter months, while maintaining proper hydration and skin care are crucial in hot and humid summers.
