Radhika Merchant dazzled in a suite of designer outfits during her pre-wedding Mediterranean cruise, each ensemble more stunning than the last. Despite her varied and luxurious wardrobe choices, one constant accessory caught everyone's eye: a black thread tied around her wrist.
Set to marry Anant Ambani, the younger son of Reliance Industries' Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, in July, 2024 Radhika celebrated with a lavish pre-wedding cruise in Europe. Hosted by the Ambani family, the event was a star-studded affair attended by Bollywood celebrities and high-profile personalities. The festivities featured a masquerade ball, performances by Katy Perry, Pitbull, and Andrea Bocelli, an open-air market in Portofino, and a grand fireworks display.
In new photos released by Vogue, Radhika was consistently seen wearing the black thread, or kaala dhaaga, on her left wrist. This accessory was noticeable whether she was in a Robert Wun dress on the first night or a blue Versace gown for the masquerade ball.
Traditionally, a black thread worn around the wrist or ankle is believed to protect against the evil eye. This thread is one of many protective measures people use to ward off negative influences. Some astrologers associate the black thread with Lord Shani and recommend wearing it after visiting a Shani temple on Saturdays. The color black is thought to absorb negative energies, thus offering protection and attracting good luck and prosperity.
Interestingly, other Ambani family members also wore the black thread during a pre-wedding celebration in Jamnagar in March. Isha Ambani, the groom-to-be’s elder sister, was seen wearing the thread at every event. Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant are set to tie the knot in Mumbai this July.
