As the demand for quick-result skincare products rises, the beauty industry continues to evolve to meet consumers' needs. However, with the increasing availability of information online, more people are becoming aware of the harmful effects of certain chemicals in skincare products and the benefits of opting for natural alternatives.

According to Healthline, "In one 2021 report, scientists tested 231 popular makeup products from the U.S. and Canada and found that more than 100 contained Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals do not break down and build up in the body over time."

The report also mentioned that "These substances include perfluorooctanoic acid, which may cause cancer, according to the American Cancer Society."

To avoid potential health risks, it's essential to steer clear of skincare products containing these harmful ingredients:

Parabens

The inclusion of parabens in skincare products has been widely debated over the years, with concerns that they could contribute to breast cancer. Although there is no definitive proof yet, it's safer to avoid products containing parabens. These chemicals are often found in shampoos, serums, and foundations.

Phthalates

Phthalates are often added to skincare products to preserve colour, dissolve aroma ingredients etc. However, they can disrupt hormones and pose health risks. Avoid products that list phthalates as an ingredient.

Alcohol

Products containing alcohol, particularly methanol (CH3OH), can dry out and irritate the skin. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), methanol is a toxic alcohol commonly found in various household and industrial agents.

Phenoxyethanol

Phenoxyethanol has a faint aroma and is a colourless, oily liquid, often used as a preservative in perfumes, face mists, and essential oils. Reports indicate that exposure to phenoxyethanol can cause eczema or even severe, life-threatening allergic reactions.
