Raksha Bandhan celebrated on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha in the Sawan month, is a vibrant festival honouring sibling bonds. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on Monday, August 19, 2024. However, due to the presence of Bhadra, a period considered inauspicious, confusion abounds regarding the optimal time for the ritual. Bhadra begins at 2:21 PM on August 18 and ends at 1:29 PM on August 19. To ensure the festival’s proper observance, Rakhi should be tied only after Bhadra has concluded.

Traditional practices behind Raksha Bandhan

  • Morning Rituals: Both siblings should start the day early, taking a bath and donning new clothes to mark the occasion.
Tilak and Akshat: Before tying the Rakhi, sisters should apply Kumkum Tilak and Akshat (uncooked rice) to their brothers' foreheads. The rice grains must be unbroken to maintain auspiciousness.
  • Head covering: During the Rakhi tying ceremony, both the sister and brother should cover their heads. This practice symbolizes respect and sanctity.
  • Hand positioning: Brothers should not accept Rakhi with empty hands. They should hold a small amount of money and Akshat in their closed fist to symbolize prosperity and stability.

  • Gifts and offerings: After the Rakhi is tied, siblings should exchange gifts. It is believed that sisters should not remain empty-handed, as it could invoke displeasure from Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
  • Timing and direction: Rakhi tying should be done outside the Bhadra period. Additionally, the brother's face should be oriented towards the east or north, with his back facing the west or south for proper alignment.
  • Knotting: Traditionally tying three knots is considered highly auspicious during the ceremony.
  • Choosing rakhi: Avoid selecting black Rakhis, as they are deemed inauspicious according to tradition.

By adhering to these guidelines, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated by traditional practices, ensuring a harmonious and prosperous bond between siblings.
