This year, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on August 7. It is an important festival celebrated by married women in India. It is especially popular in North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand. The festival usually takes place two days before Nag Panchami, on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Shravana month, and honours Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Hariyali teej: history
Hariyali Teej is to show respect to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's love and sacred union. Parvati is said to have been reborn 107 times before she could marry Lord Shiva. On her 108th birth, she was finally able to wed Lord Shiva on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan. During this period, she severed all her connections and lived by chewing on dry leaves. Lord Shiva, however, remained unaware of her affection due to his strict vow of celibacy. Parvati realised that she needed to express her love to catch Lord Shiva’s attention. She undertook a dangerous journey to the Himalayas and settled in a cave, where she was wholly devoted to him.
In her devotion, Parvati crafted a Shiva Lingam from sand. Lord Shiva, moved by her dedication, appeared before her and granted her wish. Due to the fast and rituals she observed, Lord Shiva declared Parvati as his wife. Since then, it has been believed that any woman who observes this fast with true devotion will receive the blessings she seeks from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Hariyali Teej Significance
On Hariyali Teej, Hindu women fast without water for the entire day, praying for their husbands' long and successful lives. Hindu mythology suggests that wearing all 16 ornaments can protect a husband from all dangers, which holds special significance for newlyweds.
