Karwa Chauth is just a day away and the married women are busy preparing for the festival. The auspicious Hindu festival is celebrated in North Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan. On this day, married women or those who are about to get married, observes fast (nirjala) for the health and prosperity of their husbands and fiance. The fast is special for all married women, but it holds special significance for the newlyweds. So, here we are on how to celebrate the first Karwa Chauth and what it is important.

Karwa Chauth Date and Shubh Muhurat

The festival is celebrated on Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha as per the Hindu calendar This year, the day will be observed on  November 1, Wednesday. According to Drik Panchang, the Karwa Chauth puja muhurat is from 5:36 p.m. to 6:54 p.m. The fast time is from 6:33 am to 6:15 pm, and the moonrise time is at 8:15 pm. Meanwhile, the Chaturthi tithi will begin on October 31 at 9:30 pm and end on November 1 at 9:19 pm.

Karwa Chauth for newlyweds

As its going to be first Karwa Chauth for the newly married women then in-laws should give thoughtful gifts and plan the day so that she doesnt feel burden. Also, newly-married should give her mother-in-law a Baya containing jewellery, clothes and food items.

Another important ritual which is performed between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is Sargi. On this day, the mother-in-laws should prepare a special Sargi consisting of fruits, mathri, sweets, dry fruits and other food items and eat it together before sunrise.

After having Sargim they should take a bath and start the day by cleaning their home temple and pray to lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya, to seek their blessings for a nirjala vrat.

It is important to wear traditional clothes in red and do solah sringar before moonrise as it brings priitivity. One should avoid wearing black, white or brown colour clothes on this day asit is considered auspicious.

According to Hindu mythology, a queen named Veeravati visited her brothers during Karwa Chauth. As time went by, Veeravati started feeling a little faint and waited eagerly to break her fast by sighting the Moon. Seeing her state, Veeravati's brothers tricked her into breaking the fast by showing her an object that resembled the Moon. She broke the fast after sighting the object resembling the Moon. Unfortunately, the moment she did, the news of her husband's death arrived. After learning about the trick, Veeravati pledged to keep the fast every month with full devotion and prayed to the Gods. Finally, her patience paid off, and by the end, her husband came back.
