The nine days of Shardiya Navratri are dedicated to worshipping the nine forms of Goddess Durga. As this auspicious festival continues, the third day of Shardiya Navratri , which falls on October 5, is dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta.

Navratri 2024 Day 3: Significance of Maa Chandraghanta

Maa Chandraghanta is a form of Maa Durga and is associated with the planet Venus in Hindu belief.

According to Drik Panchang, after marrying Lord Shiva, Maa Mahagauri began wearing a half-moon on her forehead, leading to her being called Maa Chandraghanta.

Maa Chandraghanta is depicted with ten arms and rides a tigress. She wears a half-moon on her head resembling a bell, which is why she is named Chandraghanta. She holds a trident, mace, sword, and Kamandalu in her four left hands, with her fifth left hand in the Var Mudra. In her four right hands, she holds a lotus flower, arrow, bow, and Jaap Mala, while her fifth right hand is in the Abhaya Mudra.

Worshipping Maa Chandraghanta

On the third day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Chandraghanta because, according to Hindu belief, the sound of the Chandraghanti present on the forehead of Maa Chandraghanta protects devotees from negative forces.

Navratri 2024 Day 3: Grey Colour

Devotees wear grey on the third day of Navratri as it symbolizes calmness and balance. Drik Panchang explains, ‘Grey symbolizes balanced thinking and encourages practicality and simplicity. This colour is ideal for devotees who prefer light shades but wish to celebrate Navratri with their own unique style.’
