As this Hindu festival of Navratri continues, the eighth day is where one can witness devotees worshiping Maa Mahagauri, one of the nine forms of Devi Durga. This day, dedicated to Maa Mahagauri symbolizes purity, serenity, and bliss, making it an integral part of this spiritual celebration.
What does Maa Mahagauri symbolise?
Maa Mahagauri is depicted with a radiant, fair complexion reminiscent of the moon. Clad in white attire, she embodies tranquility and is often associated with the conch, moon, and jasmine flowers. With four arms, she wields a trident and a drum while riding a bull, representing her strength and control over the forces of nature. Her other names, Shwetambardhara and Vrisharudha, further reflect her divine qualities and connection to the cosmos.
The celebration of Navadurga, which honors the nine avatars of Goddess Durga, occurs twice a year, with Chaitra Navratri in March-April and Sharad Navratri in September-October being particularly significant. Each of the nine days represents a different facet of the goddess, culminating in the worship of Maa Siddhidatri on the final day.
The legend of Maa Mahagauri
The name Mahagauri translates to “extremely fair,” symbolizing the goddess’s pure and radiant form. According to legend, Goddess Parvati’s intense penance to win Lord Shiva’s heart led her to change her complexion. To regain her original radiance, she performed further penance and, after defeating the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, emerged from the Ganges as Mahagauri, glowing and adorned in white.
Devotional offerings (Bhog)
On this day, devotees typically prepare special bhog, or offerings, including coconut, kheer (rice pudding), and fresh fruits. These offerings symbolize purity and are believed to please the goddess.
