Every year, International Coffee Day is celebrated on October 1. On this special occasion for coffee lovers, let’s try brewing the viral Swedish Egg Coffee that took the internet by storm.
What is the Swedish Egg Coffee Recipe?
Swedish Egg Coffee is a classic beverage for Scandinavian Americans in the Midwest. According to legend, in the 1800s this unique process of brewing traditional Swedish Egg Coffee, where you crack a raw egg, and put shell and all into a black coffee while it is brewing is believed to have made its way from Sweden to America.
Traditional Swedish Egg Coffee Recipe
Ingredients
9 1/4 cups water, divided
3/4 cup freshly ground coffee (medium to coarse grind)
1 large egg (including the shell, if you like)
1 cup cold water
Steps to Make It
Step 1: Gather the ingredients.
Step 2: Bring 9 cups of the water to a rapid boil in a saucepan or enamel coffee pot.
Step 3: While waiting for the water to boil, stir together 3/4 cup freshly ground coffee (medium to coarse grind), remaining 1/4 cup water, and 1 large egg in a small bowl or measuring cup. (You can omit the eggshell and use only the egg yolk and white if you prefer.)
Step 4: Once the water is boiling, carefully pour in the egg and coffee mixture. Turn down the heat and simmer for 3 minutes, being watchful that it doesn't boil over.
Step 5: The coffee grounds will gradually bind together into a single mass that floats to the top of the pot. Once this happens, immediately remove the pot from heat.
Step 6: Pour in the 1 cup of cold water and let the coffee sit for 10 minutes. This allows the coffee grounds to settle to the bottom of the pot.
Step 7: Once the grounds have sunk to the bottom, pour the coffee through a fine-meshed sieve or strainer into cups and serve.
