The allure of spicy food is undeniable for many, especially in countries like India, where a high tolerance for heat is the norm. However, the recent recall of Korean Buldak ramen by Danish authorities has sparked concerns about the health effects of consuming ultra-spicy foods.

Most people find anything above 1,00,000 Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) to be intensely hot. Excessive spice intake can lead to digestive discomfort and exacerbate existing gastrointestinal issues, particularly for those with sensitive stomachs.

Three fiery flavours of the Samyang ramen noodles have been banned including the Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken and Hot Chicken Stew. Denmarks's food authority has issued a wide-spread recall and warning on Tuesday, making consumers wary about the product. Although, Samyang says there's no problem with the quality of the food.

Where did instant noodles arrive from?

Instant noodles were first relished in Japan, however over time become a staple across Asia. Samyang claims itself to be the producer of South Korea’s first instant ramen in 1963, when the country was reeling under the after-match of post-war poverty and was in dire need of readily available sources of food.

Potential health implications

Digestive irritation: High concentrations of capsaicin can irritate the digestive tract, leading to issues such as heartburn and stomach ulcers. Individuals with pre-existing gastrointestinal conditions may experience worsened symptoms.

Pain relief and euphoria: Capsaicin stimulates endorphin release, the body's natural painkillers, which can provide a temporary sense of euphoria. This is one reason why some people enjoy the intense burning sensation.

Metabolic boost: Capsaicin can increase metabolism and calorie burning, which has made it a popular ingredient in some weight-loss products.

Despite these potential benefits, moderation is key. Overconsumption of spicy foods can have adverse effects on gut health, including increased risk of gastrointestinal discomfort and exacerbation of existing conditions. For those who love their spicy foods, balancing enjoyment with mindful consumption can help mitigate these risks and protect overall digestive health.
