Obesity hypoventilation syndrome - reportedly a condition in which extremely overweight people face breathing issues, or tend to breathe shallow. This condition results in low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels in the body. Low oxygen levels lead to hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, the tightening of small blood vessels in the lung to create an optimal distribution of blood through the lungs. It is not clear why obesity hypoventilation syndrome affects some people who are obese and not others. Extra fat on your neck, chest or across your abdomen region can make it difficult to breathe deeply and may produce hormones that affect your body’s breathing patterns. Reports say that most people who have obesity hypoventilation syndrome also suffer from sleep apnea.

Obesity hypoventilation syndrome signs and symptoms

Most people with obesity hypoventilation syndrome have fluctuating sleep apnea, that causes unintentional snoring and fatigue during sleep. One may feel that their levels of carbon dioxide in the body have increased, which causes drowsiness, and sometimes a major headache too. These issues lead to changes in sleep schedules and have reportedly been followed by depression. People may realise that their body cannot bear too much exertion, as there is frequent chest pain.
