India's Independence Day 2024 will be observed on August 15, marking its 78th anniversary of freedom from nearly 200 years of British rule. The day, falling on a Thursday, will be celebrated under the theme 'Viksit Bharat,' a nod to the current government’s goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, the centennial of its independence.
‘Tryst With Destiny’ speech
The historic day recalls the pivotal moment in 1947 when Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, delivered his renowned 'Tryst with Destiny' speech. In this iconic address, Nehru declared, “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” encapsulating the profound significance of India's newfound independence.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak's declaration
India's journey to freedom was marked not only by political upheaval but also by the powerful rhetoric of its leaders, whose speeches inspired and mobilized the nation. Bal Gangadhar Tilak's 1906 declaration, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it,” emphasized the fundamental right of Indians to self-rule and self-determination.
Nightingale of India's speech
Sarojini Naidu, celebrated as the Nightingale of India, made a lasting impact with her 1915 speeches, particularly her stirring words: “A country’s greatness lies in its undying ideal of love and sacrifice that inspire the mothers of the race!” Her messages highlighted the virtues of selflessness and patriotism.

In 1916, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya underscored the crucial role of education in national development, stating, “A nation can rise only when its people are educated.” As the founder of Banaras Hindu University, Malaviya’s advocacy for educational reform played a critical role in empowering the Indian populace.
As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day, these historical slogans remind us of the enduring spirit of the freedom struggle and the ongoing journey towards a developed 21st century nation.
