As Halloween approaches, Japan’s renowned bullet train transforms from a symbol of efficiency to a thrilling haunted house on wheels. This past Saturday, around 40 brave participants boarded a specially chartered shinkansen for a unique experience: the world’s first zombie apocalypse journey, inspired by the cult classic "Train to Busan."

Zombie apocalypse journey

The ride, spanning two and a half hours from Tokyo to Osaka, initially promised the usual serene experience. However, it quickly descended into chaos as actors, strategically positioned throughout the train, began their terrifying performances. Passengers, expecting a calm trip, were soon met with screaming and horror as the first staged attack unfolded.

Organized by Kowagarasetai, aptly named the "scare squad," this thrilling event aimed to disrupt the tranquility often associated with the shinkansen. Event organizer Kenta Iwana explained their intention to showcase how quickly a familiar environment could turn into a nightmare. “We wanted to depict the normally safe, peaceful shinkansen collapsing in the blink of an eye,” he noted.

The actors performed gory transformations, turning from innocent travelers into rampaging zombies, prompting gasps and screams from the audience. While the props included toy chainsaws and replica firearms, the organizers carefully avoided graphic depictions of violence, ensuring the train’s pristine reputation remained intact.

To balance the frightful elements, the experience was infused with light-hearted moments, featuring zombie cheerleaders, magicians, and comedians. Among the highlights was a choreographed dance to Michael Jackson's iconic "Thriller," providing comic relief amid the spooky atmosphere.

This innovative event highlights Japan's unique approach to combining entertainment with cultural experiences, especially during festive seasons. As passengers disembarked, many expressed exhilaration and relief, eager to share their extraordinary adventure.

With the success of this haunted shinkansen ride, it seems Japan has set a new standard for seasonal celebrations, merging the thrill of horror with the iconic speed of its bullet trains.
