Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both scored hattricks as Leicester City made Premier League history on Friday evening when they defeated Southhampton 9-0 in the English Premier League at the St. Mary's stadium. City made a new record of the biggest margin of away win in the Premier League.

The win also helped Leicester equal a 24-year-old record for the biggest ever Premier League victory. On a rainy Friday night in Southampton, the home team never clicked, nor were never allowed to be a part of the game as they were out-played right from the beginning of the match. An early red card for Ryan Bertrand in the 12th minute was a sign for the home side that things would be difficult for the rest of the match against the Foxes who have had an even better start than their 2016 title-winning season. However, nobody had anticipated it in this manner. Ben Chilwell had already scored a goal by then, and the capitulation soon began. City raced to a three-goal lead in 19 minutes, courtesy Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans scoring a goal and later assisting one for Perez. Perez added another goal before Vardy opened his account for the night just before the half time, when the scoreline read 5-0.

Ralph Hasenhüttl went into damage control mode during the break, as he fielded two more defenders, Jack Stephens and Kevin Danso to prevent his side from conceding any more goals. However, the move had no effect on a lethal City side who exploited the Saints' defence to maximise advantage. Ayoze Perez completed his hattrick in the 57th minute and Vardy added his second. James Maddison made it eight as Vardy wrapped up his hattrick and the match at fulltime with a penalty.

Leicester City now have 20 points from the opening 10 matches in the Premier League, one more than the 2015/2016 season, when they won the Premier League. After the match, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers spoke to the team's media channel, where he said, "It was a brilliant performance, we obviously started the game very well, went in front, and they obviously had the man sent off, but how we worked that, in terms of how to play. If we ever go down to 10 men, how the game looks and how it works, and we’ve seen that away at Burnley at the end of last season and then we’ve had it twice now this season and we’ve capitalised on it very well." He added that scoring nine goals in the Premier League was incredible. He said, "We looked a very good side, [a] very composed side tonight, and a very exciting team. To score nine goals in a Premier League game is incredible."

'Take full responsibility'

Saint's manager, speaking to the club's media channel said, "I take full responsibility for what happened today. Very, very bad performance, that's it. What happens now is that we must immediately try and bring the heads back up. We are all down." He later went on to praise the fans who stayed back and thanked them for support on a tough night.

For now, Leicester City are second on the Premier League table with 25 points and a one-game and one-point advantage over Manchester City, who are third with 19 points and play Aston Villa on Saturday evening. City will play Crystal Palace next Sunday evening. Southampton, on the other hand, are now in the relegation zone with just eight points and will play the two-time defending champions Manchester City next Saturday.
