A Brazilian league match between Vasco da Gama and Flamengo witnessed surreal scenes as players of both teams came to the rescue of an ambulance that refused to start on the pitch.

The ambulance was brought onto the pitch after Vasco da Gama's Bruno Silva crumpled to the ground after suffering a clash of heads with his team-mate. The player was left unconscious after the horror injury and needed to be rushed to a hospital for immediate medical treatment.

However, to the player's bad luck, his journey from the stadium to the hospital was going to be a long one after the ambulance that he was been taken in had broken down on the pitch. Luckily, the players of both teams reacted quickly to the situation by joining forces to push the vehicle into a kick-start. The delay caused by the ambulance at Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha stadium sent the 54,000 fans into splits.

"It's the first time I've seen that. It's a lamentable scene. I thought the driver was kidding but he insisted the ambulance wouldn't start and asked for our help," Flamengo defender Rever told globoesporte.com.

After a 10 minute delay, the match finally resumed. It was later revealed that Silva who had been hospitalized for concussion was released after a couple of tests and was given the green light to play by the doctors.

Though, apart from this incident, there was plenty more drama on the night that transpired during the course of the match. Before the interruption, the score of the match was locked at 1-0 in favor of Vasco d Gama after Andres Rios provided the breakthrough in the 28th minute.

The injury to Bruno Silva had forced Vasco da Gama to play the remainder of the match with 10 -men cause they had used up all their substitutes. But later Flamengo were also recuded to 10 men after their player was sent off for a rash challenge. Shortly after going a man down, Flamengo drew level after Luiz Gustavo's spectacular headed effort ended up in the back of his own net.

The drama packed match which ended 1-1 meant that Vasco are now fourth at the bottom of the league while Flamengo are just four points adrift of league leaders Internacional, who travel to Chapecoense on Friday.
