Here's a list of sports which won't be part of Indian contingent Asian in Games 2023

The 2023 Asian Games will be an exhibition of athletic prowess and cultural exchange between several Asian countries, who will be competing in the tournament in the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. 2023 will mark the 19th edition of the marquee tournament, scheduled to be held from September 23 onwards. It will feature around 40 sports and 61 disciplines.

Complete list of teams withdrawn from Asian Games 2023 by IOA

Earlier this week, a total of 15 teams from India were given permission by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to participate in the upcoming Asian Games 2023. However, several other teams of different sporting disciplines were barred to participate in the marquee continental event. The Indian Olympic Association withdrew the teams from the tournament by penning down a letter to the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC).

As per reports, the letter sent on Wednesday said, “Given the Team Draw Ceremony scheduled to be held on 27th July 2023 NOC India would like to inform the HAGOC that the entries for the following Team Sports should stand withdrawn Water polo, Basketball 5x5 Men Team, Handball Men Team, Softball," it added.

Teams to have received Ministry's nod for participation in Asian Games 2023

Meanwhile, the team to have received permission to participate in Asian Games 2023 from the Ministry are- the men's and women's cricket, men's and women's hockey, men's and women's kabaddi, women's handball, women's rugby, women's 5x5 basketball, men's and women's basketball 3x3, men's and women's volleyball side and the men's and women's football teams.

Speaking on the matter, Director of sports in the ministry reportedly said, “The entries made for other teams should be withdrawn. The approval for participation of the rest of the contingent will be conveyed in due course of time. This issues with the approval of the Competent Authority”.

It is worth noting that the men’s and women’s football teams received permission to participate in the tournament despite not matching the ministry’s criteria of being inside the top 8 rankings in Asia. However, the men’s water polo teams didn’t got lucky, despite being the no. 9 ranked team in Asia. The decision also took the Softball Association of India by surprise as they had announced the women’s team, earlier on Monday.
