An emotional Justin Gatlin broke down in his post-race interview after missing out on qualifying for what would be his fourth Olympic Games.

The 39-year-old American's hopes of returning to an Olympics came to an end when he pulled up lame about halfway through the 100m men's final at the US trials on Sunday (20 June).

Gatlin finished last in 10.87 seconds.

He told the media after the race that he had tweaked his hamstring in the semi-finals.

The former Olympic champion has been embroiled in controversy throughout his career.

Gatlin had been banned twice from international competition after failing drugs tests in 2001 and 2006.
