Lionel Messi names his favourite and the most important goal of his career

Two important goals from his remarkable career were emphasised by Lionel Messi in a recent interview with journalist Martin Arevalo of ESPN Argentina. Messi didn't think twice to highlight these specific instances out of the more than 800 goals he has scored for his clubs and the national team.

His incredible goal against Real Madrid in the first leg of the 2011 Champions League semi-final was his first choice. He considers his second pick, the pivotal goal against France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, to be the most important of his career. Lionel Messi said:

“My favorite goal? Most beautiful is the one against Real Madrid in 2011, and the most important in the World Cup final,”

The Argentine great, who scored goals in the 76th and 87th minutes of the 2011 Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid, did not specify which of his goals he was talking about. It is generally accepted, though, that he was alluding to his second goal—a fantastic solo performance that stands as one of the most memorable in Barcelona's history.

Messi's goal in the 2022 World Cup final, which gave Argentina a 3-2 lead after the game was deadlocked at 2-2, is without a doubt one of the most important of his career. This was probably the goal he had in mind, even though he did score a penalty in the 23rd minute of the final game.

Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 2-0 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on April 27, 2011. Messi broke the scoreless first half tie in the 76th minute. Xavi outwitted Real Madrid's defence with a pass to Ibrahim Afellay that created a cross that Messi finished.

A fantastic solo goal was scored by Messi eleven minutes later, under tremendous pressure from Real Madrid, after he stole the ball from Sergio Busquets close to the centre line and dribbled past several challengers. With this triumph, Barcelona was able to secure Pep Guardiola's fourth Champions League victory.

Messi also mentioned a big goal from the 2022 FIFA World Cup final versus France. Argentina led 3-2 when Messi scored off a rebound from Hugo Lloris in the 108th minute of extra time. Messi won Golden Ball as Argentina won 4-2 in the penalty shootout after France equalised.
