Lionel Messi was handed his 8th Ballon d'Or title at a coveted ceremony in Paris. The Argentine took the pole position on the podium followed by Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe. Messi led Argentina to their 3rd World Cup title in Qatar last year.

Kylian Mbappe congratulated Lionel Messi on his 8th Ballon d'Or

But Mbappe put out a post on Instagram in support of his former PSG teammate as he posted, "Congratulations Leo for your award. You deserve it." Haaland finished second while Mbappe finished third in the final Ballon d'Or list. Both the youngster are regarded as two of the most talented footballers of this era and Messi admitted there will be a fight between these two in the future. 

“It's going to be a nice fight between the two of them and between several other younger players around here. They both deserved it this year. Erling, this could have been yours and it would have felt perfect.”, added the current FIFA World Cup champion

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami from PSG this summer
