Gilbert Burns, who will be in action against Sean Brady in the main event of this weekend's fight night UFC Vegas 97, had a one-to-one with republicworld.com ahead of the fight. In the conversation, Burns elucidated what his approach is at 38 and how he is aiming to fetch another shot at the eminent Welterweight title. Durhinho also addressed a question about his former teammate and opponent Kamaru Usman.
Thus, without further ado, here are the excerpts from the conversation.
On the upcoming fight against Sean Brady:
I am really looking forward to the fight. I’m very excited; I think it’s a great match-up. My back is a little bit against the wall for the first time because I’ve taken two losses, but I’m very happy. I believe I will be able to secure a finish against Sean Brady on Saturday night and get back in the win column, which will set me up for another title run.
Anyone you’re looking to fight:
Yes, there are many fighters I’m interested in. I want a rematch with Belal, I still want to fight Kamaru, and I’d like to face Leon Edwards and Colby Covington. There are so many big fights out there that I want to pursue.
Approach at this stage in your career:
I just turned 38, so I need to be a bit more professional. I’m focusing on my recovery and training routine. I do a lot of physical therapy and other things to ensure I stay healthy. My goal is to become a champion, and my approach is to beat Sean Brady on Saturday night, then beat another opponent, and secure a title shot.
Chances of moving up the weight ladder:
No! I’m a welterweight; I’m not that big. I could put on some weight and fight in the middleweight division, but the current plan is to win the belt at welterweight.
Whether Kamaru Usman still has some steam left:
I don’t know. You’d have to ask Kamaru. He’s had three losses, so he has some work to do. He wants to fight this year—people are talking about it—but he needs to get a win. Three losses is very tough. I believe he’s also focused on performing well in the ring, but he needs to secure a victory right now.
