PM Modi Pens Heartfelt Note For Sumit Antil After Star Athlete Breaks Paralympics Record Twice

After shooter Avani Lekhara, javelin thrower Sumit Antil has become only the second Indian athlete to defend the Paralympics gold.

Paris Paralympics 2024: India's star Javelin thrower Sumit Antil has scripted history. Antil defended his Paralympics gold and became only the second Indian athlete after Avani Lekhara to clinch two consecutive gold medals in two consecutive Paralympic games. He smashed his own record set by him in Tokyo as he landed a throw of  69.04m in his first attempt. Antil then ended up doing something very special and landed a 70.59 meters throw and set a fresh Paralympics record.

Apart from Sumit Antil, two other Indians in the event. Sandeep (F44) and Sandip Sargar (F44) who registered their best throws of best throws of 62.80m and 58.03m finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Dulan Kodithuwakku from Sri Lanka who is a world record holder  in the F44 category finished on the second place whereas Michal Burain of Australia finished third with season best throw of 64.89 meters.

Soon after Antil's heroics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and shared a heartfelt post for Sumit Antil. 'Exceptional performance by Sumit! Congratulations to him for winning the Gold in the Men's Javelin F64 event! He has shown outstanding consistency and excellence. Best wishes for his upcoming endeavours', wrote PM Modi.

India Shine On Day 5 Of Paralympics

With a total of seven medal, the Indian contingent registered an exceptional performance on the fifth day of the ongoing Paralympics. Kumar Nitesh clinched his first Paralympic gold in men’s singles SL3, while Suhas Yathiraj and Thulasimathi Murugesan secured silver medals in SL4 and SU5 categories respectively, as India bagged four badminton medals at the Paris Games on Monday.

Young Manisha Ramadass added to the tally by winning a bronze in the women’s singles SU5, marking a historic day for Indian para badminton. Nitesh, 29, who lost his left leg in a train accident in 2009, displayed remarkable resilience and tactical brilliance in his 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 victory over Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in a gripping final, securing India’s first gold of the event.
