Tokyo 2020 dreams come true at Asian Olympic wrestling qualification event

The city of Almaty in Kazakhstan hosted three days of competition from Friday to Sunday in the final continental wrestling qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Twenty four countries were represented with 200 athletes competing.

In Friday's Greco-Roman qualifiers, Akzhol Makhmudov of Kyrgzystan confirmed his Greco-Roman Olympic spot with an 8-2 semi-final win over India's Gurpreet Singh in the under-77kg class; Makhmudov went on to defeat Japan's Shohei Yabiku in the final 7-3.

On women's qualification day on Saturday, China's Zhou Feng qualified for her second Olympics in the under-68kg class with a 12-2 semi-final victory over South Korea's Park Hyeon-yeong.

Meanwhile, young Indian wrestler Anshu Malik ensured her first Olympic entry as she beat Shokhida Akhmedova of Uzbekistan in the under-57kg semi- finals, winning by technical superiority of 12-2.

Sunday's freestyle competition saw Uzbekistan's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov earn a second trip to the Olympics with a 4-2 victory over Elaman Dogdurbek Uulu in the under-74kg semi-final.

The two-time Asian champion placed fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
