Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone is still a part of the rumour mill, with many credible sources suggesting a launch next year. Whether or not that materialises, an iPhone with a folding screen is hotly anticipated and the rumours around it keep cropping up. The latest piece of information talks about the hinge the foldable iPhone would use, saying that it could made of liquid metal instead of titanium for better durability.
According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a spotless track record of providing intel on Apple-related developments, the foldable iPhone would use some sort of liquid metal in its hinge. While that would offer better strength than titanium, it is also speculated to be even sturdier than the hinge found in existing foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
The analyst said liquid metal could refer to the “amorphous alloy” or the “metallic glass,” which is more than two times stronger than titanium. The structure of the said liquid metal could be immune to bending, deformation, and even pressure, which will improve the durability and longevity of the hinge, as well as the overall device.
In addition to stronger material, the hinge’s design may allow Apple to offer a creaseless experience on the foldable iPhone’s display, per the analyst. The foldable OLED display is prone to external pressure, such as finger pressing and bending. However, Apple is reportedly talking to its suppliers to work on more durable flexible OLED technology to mitigate potential issues, and reduce or eliminate the crease, while offering a flagship viewing experience.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously said the foldable iPhone is headed to markets sometime in 2026 without specifying a specific timeline. Apple, he said, is working on a vertically-folding iPhone that will work similarly to the Galaxy Z Fold. It could pack a 5000mAh battery and have a thickness of 4.6mm when open and 9.2mm when folded. Apple may set the foldable iPhone’s price at around $2,000 (roughly ₹1.71 lakh), which is higher than the current Galaxy Z Fold model’s cost.
