iPadOS 18 now rolling out: Eligible iPads and top features

Following the announcement at the “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9, Apple has begun rolling out iPadOS 18, the latest software update for the company’s tablets. iPadOS 18 packs the same features as iOS 18, alongside exclusive additions optimised for the device’s big screen. Apple is placing big bets on iPadOS 18 to boost sales of its tablets, the shipments of which have shrunk each year despite meaningful innovations such as the company’s M-series chipsets.

Eligible iPad users can download the new iPadOS 18 update starting at 10.30 PM on Monday, September 16. It is available as a free update to all users.

iPadOS 18 features

Apple has added several new features as part of the iPadOS 18 update. While most of them have been borrowed from iOS 18, they have been optimised for the big iPad screen. There is a new Calculator app that can solve math problems, while the new Notes app supports Smart Script to change handwritten notes into typed notes. The iPadOS 18 update brings better home screen customisations, allowing users to choose colourful themes for the entire interface, including a new dark mode for app icons. The tab bar design has also been tweaked for better functionality, while the Files app now lets users store folders and files permanently downloaded on the device. The Photos app has also been redesigned for the iPad.

However, Apple will not release its AI capabilities, called Apple Intelligence, as part of iPadOS 18, leaving iPad users deprived of iOS 18’s major feature.
