Spotify Offline Backup feature: Spotify today announced a new feature for its users. The feature called Offline Backup is available to Premium subscribers only and it gives users access to the songs that they recently listened to even when they are out of the network coverage area or simply unable to connect to the internet.
It is worth noting that Spotify's paid subscribers can already download songs and podcasts in the app. However, the feature requires users to download every single track manually. By contrast, the company's Offline Backup feature enables users to curate a playlist of the songs that they listened to recently without any manual intervention. This playlist is updated dynamically based on a user's most recent played songs and it can be accessed even in the areas where there is no internet connectivity.
How does Spotify's Offline Backup feature work?
Spotify says that instead of relying on artificial intelligence (AI), like the platform's Daylist feature, Offline Backup feature relies on the on-device cache to curate the list of recently played songs. Spotify says that using cache not only saves data but also storage space.
"Offline Backup takes your queued and recently streamed tracks and creates one easy-to-access playlist that is unique to you. To do this, we include tracks already stored on your device as part of your regular listening on Spotify (also known as cache)," Spotify wrote in a blog post.
The company says while the Offline Backup playlist gets updated automatically, Spotify Premium subscribers can filter out songs within the playlist based on artist, mood, and genre.
Spotify's Offline Backup feature availability
Spotify says that it will start rolling out the Offline Backup feature on Android, iOS, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay this week.
How to use Spotify's Offline Backup feature
Spotify says that Offline Backup will appear automatically in the Home feed anytime a user is offline. The only caveat is that the user should have listening to more than five songs recently and enabled the Offline Listening feature.
Here's how to enable the Offline Listening feature in the Spotify app:
Step 1: Download the latest version of the Spotify app from the Google Play Store or Apple 's App Store.
Step 2: Go to the Settings section.
Step 3: Next go to the Privacy settings.
Step 4: Go to storage and then toggle the Offline Listening toggle button.
