WhatsApp, a widely used messaging platform boasting over 2 billion global users, is contemplating the introduction of advertisements in two specific areas of its app: Channels and Status. Notably, the company has decided against incorporating ads in the primary inbox, a move aimed at preserving the user experience.

WhatsApp's CEO, Will Cathcart, explained in an interview with Brazilian media that the decision to avoid ads in the primary inbox is driven by the desire to maintain a user-friendly environment. However, he did not rule out the possibility of ads appearing in WhatsApp's Channels, a relatively recent broadcast feature, or in Status, a function akin to Stories.

In the case of Status, Cathcart mentioned that ads could serve to promote Channels or offer access to premium content. He also indicated that channel owners might have the option to charge subscribers. While Status ads have been discussed previously, their implementation remains uncertain, and no concrete timeline has been established.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has not issued an official statement on the matter. A representative from Meta informed TechCrunch that there are currently no tests underway for Status ads in any country.

WhatsApp has traditionally generated revenue through business communications and click-to-WhatsApp ads on external platforms, such as Facebook. However, the company is now exploring alternative avenues to monetise its extensive user base.
