WhatsApp is now rolling out new features to enhance the video chatting experience on all platforms. Meta’s chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg Tuesday announced as many as ten new filters will be available to WhatsApp users when they make a video call. In addition to some basic beauty filters, the new set also includes filters such as ‘fisheye’ and ‘vintage TV’ to make videos look different. The chat app is also adding new virtual backgrounds, such as a beach, cafe, or office.

In a post on his channel, Zuckerberg said, “Rolling out some new filters and backgrounds for video calls so had to test them out.” His message was followed by a handful of screengrabs of him with new filters and backgrounds during a video call with his wife Priscilla Chan.

According to WhatsApp, the new filters “are designed to help you create a more playful atmosphere, whether that’s adding a splash of colour or creating a more artistic feel for your video.” The new filters include Warm, Cool, Black & White, Light leak, Dreamy, Prism light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted glass and Duo tone.

As for virtual backgrounds, WhatsApp said they will “keep your surroundings private and transport yourself to a cosy coffee shop or comfortable living room for a more clean and polished look.” The backgrounds that will be rolling out to users over the coming days include Blur, Living Room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration and Forest. The backgrounds have been available on more formal video calling platforms, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet for quite a while.

WhatsApp said it is also adding Touch Up and Low Light options to help users “feel more confident and comfortable by naturally enhancing the look and brightness of your environment, making your video calls more vibrant and enjoyable.”
