Apple launched the iPhone 16 series earlier this month with a dedicated Action button. This action button replaces the Ring/Silent button that has been a part of Apple's iPhone models since it launched in 2007.

For the unversed, the Ring/Silent button enabled iPhone users to set their iPhone models on ringing or silent modes based on their requirements. It couldn't be customised and hence had limited usage. Apple changed that with the launch of the iPhone 15 series devices last year. The company replaced the Ring/Silent button with a new Action button. However, the feature was restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro models, which includes the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

But Apple changed that with the launch of the iPhone 16 series, which includes the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. All the models in the iPhone 16 series come with the Action button.

What's the use of Action button?

Action button is much more dynamic than the Ring/Silent button as it can be customised to perform various functions based on an individual user's needs. Here's a list of features that the Action button supports:

-- Silent Mode: It can be used for switching between Silent and Ring mode for calls and alerts.

-- Focus: It can be used to turn on a Focus to filter out distractions.

-- Camera: It can be used for opening the camera app.

-- Flashlight: It can be used to turn the flashlight on or off.

-- Voice Memo: It can be used for recording voice memos and voice notes.

-- Recognise Music: It can be used for triggering Shazam for identifying music.

-- Translate: It can be used for translating phrases in another language.

-- Magnifier: It can used for turning the iPhone into a magnifying glass to zoom in on objects.

-- Controls: It can be used for accessing commonly used controls.

-- Accessibility: It can be used for accessing a set accessibility feature.

-- Shortcut: It can also be used for opening a app.

iPhone users can also set it to take no action at all.
