Samsung’s first rollable phone may arrive in 2025

Samsung may plan to launch a smartphone with a rollable display in 2025, according to a report. The South Korean company showed off its ultra-flexible and large display some years back, which it will reportedly use in the upcoming phone. The smartphone may come with a 12.4-inch display, which when used in its entirety could allow the device to double as a tablet. Samsung’s close rival Huawei last week launched the world’s first tri-folding smartphone with a display around the same size.

The current foldable smartphone lineup in Samsung’s kitty includes two-folding and flip phones, but their first model came out over five years ago in 2019. Other smartphone brands, such as Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Google started late but showed innovation in the foldable phone design. On the other hand, Apple has yet to catch up to Samsung as its foldable is reportedly several years away.

If the report holds any water, it could give Samsung an upper hand, as it operates globally compared to other mobile phone brands. Samsung’s rollable display technology could prove to be the next innovation in the foldable phone industry. Although a rollable display was first showed off by LG on a prototype television, now commercially available across the company’s key markets. LG also announced its rollable screen phone, but it could not see light of the day as the company shut down its mobile phone operations in 2021.

While Samsung has not confirmed a phone with a rollable display, it demonstrated the technology at this year’s SID Display Week. The company claimed the rollable OLED screen, called Rollable Flex, will work on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices that can be fit into smaller spaces. The screen will roll up to offer its full functionality, but work as a mobile phone’s regular display when rolled back inside.

Other details such as what the rollable phone would look like and the materials it would use are scarce currently. Previous leaks have only pointed out the South Korean company’s in-development display technology, but there is no clarity on its implementation in commercially viable devices, such as smartphones.
