A woman in China met with an unfortunate event when her iPhone 14 Pro Max unexpectedly exploded while charging, according to a report. The explosion caused her severe burns, scorched the bed, and even left black marks on the wall -- raising safety concerns. According to an early probe into the incident, the iPhone 14 Pro Max's battery malfunctioned while it was put on charging, causing the explosion due to its proximity to things like the bed that easily catches fire.
The ordeal
According to the Hui Bang Mang radio programme by Shanxi Radio and Television, the iPhone 14 Pro Max suddenly exploded at around 6.30 AM when the woman was sleeping beside it. In her sleep, the woman turned over, brushing her hand against the flames. That caused her to wake up in shock and see burns on her hand. Already in agony, the woman gradually saw the fire spreading from her bedside to almost the top portion of the bed, before eventually blackening the wall with smoke. The report said that the iPhone 14 Pro Max had entirely combusted with no scope of recovery.
Woman's demand
The woman told the local radio that she bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022, so it was already out of warranty when the incident happened. However, she expressed insistence on finding out more about the incident and its causes, along with compensation demands for the injuries she sustained and the damage done to her apartment.
Apple acknowledges
After the incident was reported, Apple took cognisance of the incident and issued a response, underscoring the company's commitment to investigating the potential risks related to its products. It said it had sympathy with the woman and assured her that the charred iPhone 14 Pro Max unit would undergo a detailed investigation to understand the reasons behind the malfunctioning of the battery.
