Apple’s long-rumoured iPhone 17 Air will likely arrive this year as part of the iPhone 17 series. While multiple reports have suggested that it would be significantly thinner than the rest of the models, a new leaked image shows an iPhone 17 Air dummy next to an iPhone 17 Pro dummy with an insanely slimmed-down body.
The 3D-printed models based on CAD renders of the iPhone 17 Air show that it is almost half as thick as the Pro model. Previous reports have suggested the iPhone 17 Air will be 5.5mm thick without the camera bump — the lowest for an iPhone by far. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously said the iPhone 17 Air could be the company’s thinnest model to date, with the new image corroborating the claim. However, when the camera bump is factored in, the total thickness of the iPhone 17 Air could become 9.5mm.
Reports are rife that the iPhone 17 Air could mark a big leap in how Apple’s most-selling product will look in future. Gurman said the slim iPhone could be used as the baseline for products, such as the foldable iPhone, expected sometime next year. He added that Apple wanted the iPhone 17 Air to be a portless device at one point, but abandoned the plans to implement the futuristic changes due to the European Union’s regulations around the USB-C technology. However, it could be a precursor to portless iPhones that Apple may plan to launch in the coming years. It could also spur other major changes to Apple’s ecosystem, according to the report.
The redesign on the iPhone 17 Air includes a single camera inside a visor-style bump. It may have a taller 6.6-inch display, a Camera Control button, and a battery comparable to other models. However, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to shed one feature or two because of its design. Apple may implement the missing features in its successive versions.
